A genuine Montecristi Panama hat is one of the most labor-intensive objects you can buy — and knowing what separates the authentic article from a machine-made copy will save you money and disappointment.
What “authentic” actually means
An authentic Panama hat is hand-woven in Ecuador from toquilla straw. The finest of all are woven in the village of Pile, near Montecristi, where a handful of master weavers still produce hats of a fineness the rest of the world cannot match. Ecuador’s toquilla weaving is recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the very caliber woven in Pile was shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2017.
Five marks of a real Montecristi
- Hand-woven, not machine-made. No machine touches a real Montecristi at any stage. Machine-made straw hats look stiff and lifeless up close.
- The El Cangrejo rosette. Turn the hat over. A genuine Montecristi begins with a tight woven rosette at the very center of the crown.
- Weave fineness. The more weaves per inch, the finer — and more valuable — the hat. Held to the light, a fine weave is astonishingly dense and even.
- Woven in Ecuador, not Panama. The name is a historical accident; real ones come from Ecuador.
- Suppleness. A fine Montecristi feels almost like cloth and springs back to shape.
