Domingo Carranza weaving a Montecristi Panama hat entirely by hand

The Craft · Woven entirely by hand

No machine ever
touches the straw.

Every Montecristi Panama hat is woven from a single toquilla palm, by one pair of hands, over weeks and months at the loom — from the first row at the crown to the final trim.

The material

A palm, split finer than thread.

The straw comes from the toquilla palm — Carludovica palmata — that grows along Ecuador’s coast. The young shoots are cut, split by hand into threads finer than sewing cotton, then boiled and sun-dried before a single row is woven.

The finest grades are worked with straw so thin it all but disappears between the fingers. It is why a Montecristi is measured not in size alone, but in fineness.

From palm to hat

Four stages, one pair of hands.

01

The straw

Toquilla shoots are harvested young and split by hand into hair-fine fibre, then boiled and dried.

02

The crown

Weaving begins at a single point at the crown — the tight spiral start native to Pile — and grows outward, row by row.

03

The loom

Bent over the wooden block, often before dawn, the weaver works from weeks to nearly a year, depending on the fineness.

04

The finish

The hat is washed, set in the sun, blocked to shape and trimmed entirely by hand before it leaves Pile.

The finer the weave, the longer the loom — and the fewer hands in the world that can make it.
